Measure definition
Time from judgment to writ execution
The interval from judgment entry to the writ of possession actually being executed. In our records this is consistently the stage with the widest variance and the largest share of recoverable time.
Findings in preparation
Almost none of this interval is legally required. It is application timing plus execution scheduling — which means it is the stage where operational discipline shows up most clearly in the numbers.
How it is computed
- Population
- Cases with a recorded judgment date and a recorded writ execution date.
- Measure
- Calendar days from judgment entry to writ execution.
- Reported as
- Median and interquartile range by county, decomposed into judgment-to-application and application-to-execution where both dates exist.
- Cut by
- County and executing office type — sheriff versus marshal.
- Suppression
- Cells below the disclosure threshold are suppressed.
What this measure does not tell you
- Requires both dates recorded; cases missing either are excluded and the exclusion rate is published
- Execution scheduling depends on the executing office's queue, which we observe but do not control
- Our own scheduling practice is part of what this measures — it is not a neutral county benchmark
Definitions are published before findings, deliberately.
Publishing the method first means the number can't be reverse-engineered to suit a conclusion. When the
analysis is complete the findings appear on this page under this definition, unchanged.
